Are Upwork Connects worth it?
Short answer
Connects are cheap. What they buy is not. The Connects themselves are a small part of the cost of a proposal; the time you spend writing it is the bulk. Connects are worth it only on jobs where your realistic win chance times the contract value clears both costs, which rules out most of what you can see in the feed.
The mistake is treating Connects as the price of bidding. They are not. A proposal that takes 20 minutes to write costs you the same 20 minutes whether the job was worth bidding on or not, and at any professional rate that time dwarfs the Connects.
So the useful question is not "can I afford the Connects", it is "what is a reply costing me". Divide everything you have spent on bidding, Connects plus time, by the number of clients who actually replied. Most bidders have never worked that number out. It is usually the number that changes their behaviour.
The fee picture around it matters too. The headline is a 0 to 15% freelancer service fee and a 5% client marketplace fee on the Basic plan, but independent analysis puts the real all-in cost for an active agency at 22% to 34% of gross once Connects, membership, proposal labour and withdrawal fees are stacked.
None of that makes the platform a bad deal. It makes indiscriminate bidding a bad deal. The fix is not to spend more on Connects, or to buy a boost. It is to bid on fewer, better-qualified jobs.

Should I boost my proposal with extra Connects?
Boosting buys position, not fit. On a job you were going to lose it moves you up a list you should not have joined. Spend the Connects on qualifying harder instead.
What is a good cost per reply?
There is no published benchmark, so treat your own number as the baseline and work to bring it down. The useful comparison is your cost per reply this month against last month, not against a figure someone quoted online.
