Interview questions

Applied research

Works on problems where the method is not settled yet.

What separates them

Published work measures whether an idea is novel; a business needs to know whether an idea is worth its time, and that judgement never shows up in a citation count.

Ask these

01

Tell me about a research question you pursued where the answer turned out to be negative, or the approach simply didn't work. What did you do with that result?

Tests whether negative results are treated as useful information or quietly buried.

A strong answer

They give a specific example and describe what was learned and how it redirected the work or saved effort elsewhere. They also describe how the finding was communicated even though it wasn't a win.

The confident failure

They struggle to name a negative result at all, or describe one that was quietly dropped with no onward communication or captured learning.

02

How do you decide when a research question is worth pursuing for this business, versus interesting but not useful right now?

Tests judgement about aligning open ended work with business value, the core tension in applied research.

A strong answer

They describe tying the question to a concrete decision or bet, and timeboxing exploratory work rather than letting it run indefinitely. They also give a real example of something they deliberately chose not to pursue.

The confident failure

They say everything interesting is worth investigating given the chance, with no example of turning something down, treating research as inherently valuable regardless of the business context.

03

Describe a piece of research you did where the method wasn't settled going in. How did you know when to stop exploring and commit to an approach?

Tests comfort with ambiguity and a real stopping rule, rather than endless exploration or premature commitment.

A strong answer

They give a specific example and name a concrete signal that triggered commitment, for example diminishing returns on a metric or a genuine resource constraint. They also describe how they communicated that decision to stop.

The confident failure

They describe the exploration vividly but can't say what triggered the decision to stop, implying it was time pressure alone with no real judgement involved.

04

How do you communicate a genuinely uncertain research finding to people who need to make a decision now?

Tests whether they can translate uncertainty into something actionable rather than hiding behind caveats or oversimplifying.

A strong answer

They describe giving a clear recommendation alongside the uncertainty, for example a range tied to what would change that recommendation, and a specific example of a decision made under that uncertainty.

The confident failure

They describe a report full of caveats with no clear recommendation, or oversell a preliminary result as settled to make it easier for the decision maker.

What we ask when assessing for the register

Harder, and answerable only by somebody who has done the work. Published because a question that stops working when it is known was never testing anything.

01

Walk me through a piece of your research that didn't hold up once someone else tried to reproduce or build on it. What happened?

Only a genuine researcher will have had this happen; tests honesty and understanding of what went wrong technically.

A strong answer

They give a specific example and name the actual technical reason for the discrepancy, for example an unstated assumption or a result that depended heavily on a particular seed. They also describe what was done to correct it.

The confident failure

They claim no such case has occurred, or describe a minor discrepancy attributed vaguely to a different setup without any technical detail.

02

Describe a case where you had to argue against a finding that the team wanted to be true. What was the pressure and how did you handle it?

Tests scientific integrity under social or commercial pressure to produce a positive result.

A strong answer

They give a specific example and name the pressure explicitly, for example a launch depending on the result. They also describe the evidence they brought and how the disagreement was resolved, including cases where they were overruled.

The confident failure

They say this has never come up, or describe conceding without describing any attempt to press the point with evidence.

Ask these whatever the discipline

  • Tell me about something you built that failed in production. What broke, how did you find out, and what did you change?
  • What would you refuse to do on this project, and what would you tell me instead?
  • How would you know, three months in, that this was not working?
  • What is the part of your own work that you are least confident about?
With the answer patterns

If they hold a certification

Relevant here, and none of them is evidence on its own. What each does and does not prove is set out in full on the certifications page.

  • Azure Data Scientist Associate, DP-100, Microsoft. Statistical judgement. Nothing in the syllabus tests whether the holder would notice a leak between training and evaluation data.
